Useful Resources on the Web

Tools of the trade

Spider Viewer SEO Tool

This page lets you type in the URL of any website and see the site the way a search engine spider sees it (if this doesn't make sense to you, have a look at my article To Be Found on the Web, Think Like a Spider for an explanation).

FreshBooks

Track the time you spend on projects, automatically generate invoices, and receive payment online with this great tool. I've used FreshBooks to replace a complex mess of offline systems, saving me time and saving my clients money.

Backpack

Get yourself organized! Manage your to-do lists, notes, calendars and reminders online. Send notes, lists and files to your Backpack pages by email, and get reminders by email or SMS (although the SMS option doesn't work in Australia). Sign-up is free.

Dictionary.com

Simply the most useful free online dictionary I've found. It also includes a thesaurus and encyclopedia.

Article submission sites

eZineArticles.com

One of the biggest and most popular article submission sites.

Helium

Helium actually pays you (modestly) for articles from their advertising revenue. You don't get to put a resource box on your article, but visitors can click through to your Helium profile.

Websites to learn from

Grist

Grist is an environmental news, humour and commentary website. I mention Grist here because their fun use of language throughout – in headlines, links and content – adds appeal and attracts readers. They also make great use of a range of distribution technologies without sacrificing clarity.
